Sweetbriar Energy Park

Safeguarding the UK’s electricity network, sustainably.

Sweetbriar Solar Farm was consented by North Lincolnshire Council in February 2024.

Lightrock Power have since secured a further grid connection and are now able to propose adding an 800MW battery storage facility. This proposal will help to boost the efficiency of the consented Sweetbriar Solar Farm and other renewable energy projects. The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) will be located to the west of the Solar panels, by the existing sewage works. The new site is to include significant habitat creation alongside the infrastructure, as shown below.

The BESS will import electrical power when the electricity being generated by renewables, such as the solar farm, is more than electricity demand. The conserved power is subsequently exported back into the grid during periods of high demand or low generation.

Our BESS proposal means energy can be stored closer to the point of generation to help mitigate the need to transport energy across Great Britain, which can cause issues for the national grid. It also reduces the need for generation from more expensive and dirty sources such as fossil fuels.

The project would deliver significant carbon savings, helping to decarbonise the GB electricity grid in line with local and national Government targets and to move us closer to more affordable household bills that are possible from renewables with a fossil fuel free electricity market.

The Site has been designed in partnership with RSPB and Buglife, ensuring the best possible outcome for local biodiversity. Any biodiversity net gain (BNG) that this project achieves will be in addition to the 168% already secured at the solar farm.

Our pre-application community consultation is now open, and will close on 14th March 2025. You can find out how to take part at the bottom of this page.
